Chris Walla on crowd interaction

"Concerts are an event for the audience. Everyone is there because they want to be there, and they're excited about what's going to happen. It's weird when you live it everyday, and you get up on stage and it's no big deal. It's hard to keep in mind that people like different kinds of music, in different ways, at different times of day, whether or not they've had enough coffee or whiskey, or whether or not their blood sugar is in the right place, you know anything. I've made it a point on this tour to look at the crowd and make eye contact with people every now and then. Just to look and see what's going on. And whenever you make eye contact with somebody, you always get a huge grin because they're really excited about being there. It happens at the quiet, weird shows where everyone's a little skittish about whether or not everybody's having a good time. And it happens at the big slam touch down shows too, so it's just strange how different things are from town to town."
